Brad Pitt was at Angelina Jolie's side as she gave birth to a son and daughter Saturday at the Fondation Lenval hospital in Nice, France, PEOPLE has confirmed.

"The babies are doing well. The operation went just perfectly," Dr. Michel Sussmann told PEOPLE Sunday. "Angelina is in very good spirits. Brad Pitt was at her side. He was there and all was well."

Angelina Jolie's new twins are to be named honorary citizens of Nice, France, according to the city's mayor.

The Tomb Raider star was admitted to the Lenval hospital in the Provencal city last week and is likely to remain there until the birth of her twins.

Angelina Jolie has checked in to a French maternity clinic and is expected to soon give birth to twins, bringing her brood with Brad Pitt to six, the hospital has said.

"As part of the normal monitoring of her pregnancy, as it has been arranged for a long time, Ms. Angelina Jolie was admitted to the Lenval Foundation's Santa Maria maternity clinic," said a statement from the Nice-based clinic on Tuesday.
